Miguel ambled into the large hollowed tree that he and his parents used as a cave, for there were none in this forest. He laid down at the back of the tree, his usual lay, when his mother barked at him. Miguel jumped up, knowing now that his place was no longer there, for it was now Kariah's. Scarlet wanted her as far away from the entrance as possible, and that meant that Miguel must move. Miguel laid down closer to the entrance, but before he closed his eyes, he snuck a glance at Kariah, and saw for the first time her inner beauty. She was headstrong, just like Lokken had said, and she must have had even an ounce of hope left in her, otherwise she would not even bother trying to escape. Miguel closed his eyes, and thought to himself, 'Only four months, only four.'
Scarlet ordered Kariah to lie down at the back of the tree, where Miguel had just moved from, then she went to the entrance and watched out, waiting for her husband to return. He made an excuse that he was restless, and wanted to just go for a stroll. Though Scarlet didn't believe this was his true intention, she didn't argue the point; she was exhausted from today, and she was ready to just give it up and get a good night's rest. She felt she needed the extra energy to handle Kariah tomorrow, and if she tried to escape again or was killed, she would die, for she couldn't bare the thought of losing her son or husband.

Kariah walked silently alongside Scarlet, her head level with the adult's shoulder. She glanced once or twice at the nal, trying to work out how she would get him out, whether she died in the process or not. She sighed, glancing around them. Kani had never introduced her to this place, and she wondered why they were there. She swung her head from side to side, looking out her good eye so that she could identify the place. It didn't help much, for this place was unfamiliar in every sense of the word. She looked at Scarlet, the question hanging on her jaw, but then Miguel entered a hollow tree.
Kariah followed curiously, wondering if this was the family's home. She looked around, and jumped slightly when Scarlet barked at her son to move. She went and took his place, wishing that they wouldn't be so suspicious of her. Of course, it was her own fault for trying to escape so many times. But honestly, did they believe she wanted to be responsible for another's life? She didn't. She lay her head on her paws, looking sorrowfully at Miguel. When he glanced at her, she pulled her lip up into a small smile, and glanced at Scarlet when he looked away. But she looked back at him, realizing something. She would have to wait to get him out. He was too young to escape now. He wouldn't be able to keep up. And she didn't want him to die because he fell behind.
She closed her eyes, trying to fall asleep. But she found that she couldn't. Too many thoughts were plaguing her, and she opened her eyes again. It seemed Miguel was asleep. But Scarlet was awake and keeping watch. Kariah knew she was worried, afraid that the yearling would run away or die. The white wolf lifted her head, and spoke. "You know, I hate to be responsible for someone's death. Especially a nal. I won't try to escape anymore. Not for a while. I just thought you'd like to know." And with those words out of her mouth, she lay her head back on her paws, and closed her eyes. She wasn't sleeping, but she was hoping that she would fall asleep soon.

Scarlet heard Kariah's testimony, and though she didn't know whether or not to trust her word, she didn't respond right away. She was too worried about Jose, for he had been gone for a while. She stared out into the dark, trying to see even the slightest movement, or hear the faintest sound, but she wasn't so lucky. Dropping her head in defeat, she laid down a few steps from the entrance of the hollowed tree so that when Jose came home, she would know it. With a sigh, she commented to Kariah, "You're still a little bitch, you know it?" Though Scarlet was angry with Kariah, worried about Jose, and unknowing of the truth behind Kariah's words, she felt a connection to the young felme that she hadn't noticed before. She was ashamed of herself, for the thought ran through her head that she might actually be starting to like Kariah, in an odd sense. She would never admit it, but she knew she would loosen up on her, and maybe, just maybe, talk to her son. She did, by all means, say that she didn't wish to be responsible for the death of a nal, so maybe she wasn't so bad. At any rate, Scarlet couldn't fight the darkness that enveloped her eyes and mind any longer, and so she let herself slip into a slumber, one that would bring her to peace with the day's events.

Kariah laughed softly and shrugged. "Something we have in common." She smirked, for she really didn't want to cause trouble for the older felme. She simply wanted out of the pack, out of all of this. She wanted to go back to being a loner, and she wanted to go back to her mother so that she could live her life the way she was meant to. As Scarlet fell asleep, Kariah's eyes drifted to Miguel. How would she get him out? Whatever she did, she couldn't let them get caught again. And she couldn't leave without him. Otherwise he would die, and she would never forgive herself. She sighed, watching him sleep.
There would have to be a plan.

Miguel had awoke when his mother insulted Kariah, and then he heard Kariah's remark. When his mother didn't reply, he figured she was asleep. He slowly opened one of his eyes to peek towards the place Scarlet was lying, and saw that she wasn't moving. She was asleep. Miguel then finished opening both of his eyes and darted them across the hollow tree. His eyes settled on the place where Kariah had lain, and saw two specks of white - her eyes. He carefully raised his head as not to disturb his mother, and silently sighed. Whispering to Kariah, he could only hope they wouldn't be caught interacting with each other. "Sorry for what I said earlier, I didn't mean it."

Kariah saw a flicker of movement from Miguel. Just a tiny hint of movement, the opening of an eye. She watched him open the other eye. He raised his head to look at her, and Kariah imediately and automatically looked to Scarlet, making sure she was fast asleep. She gave a small sigh of relief. When the nal spoke, she turned her eyes back to him. "I know, I know," she said slowly, deliberately. She glanced at Scarlet again.
"I'm sorry, kid. It's a pity you were born into this hellhole." She fixed her gaze to his for a brief moment, and winked. A small smile curled her lips, and she gave a slow wag of her tail. She wasn't going to say outright that she was going to get him out of here, and she sure as hell wasn't going to say her plan out loud. Maybe later. So now she would code her words carefully, and give him signals as to what she meant. Especially when there were others around. She cast her gaze on Scarlet again, watching silently. She couldn't be sure if the she-wolf was sleeping or acting, and she wasn't willing to take the chance. She yawned, like nothing unusal had happened.

Miguel smiled at Kariah, and commented jokingly, "I'm not a kid." He blew air from his nose in sort of a laugh, but he couldn't laugh here, for it would wake his mother. He glanced over at her, but she still hadn't budged. He looked back at Kariah, and then she winked at him. Through all the dirt and mud and just plain filth, she was still pretty, that was for sure. And she apparently cared about him. Though he had no clue as to why, it seemed that way to him. "So, what's it like?" Miguel was referring to Kariah's past, of her living in the loner lands, of her being free. He hoped that she would catch his drift, for if his mother even heard him subconciously, he was sure to get a beating for even thinking about being free.

She smiled at him, going back to her old self for a while. It was nice to feel just a little bit free, to be able to feel that bit of herself creep back. "It's great. You'd like it. You get to do whatever you want, as long as you don't disrupt the others. But you have to be careful. All sorts of wolves live out there. And you have to learn to fend for yourself, without a pack to back you up. But mostly it's pretty good." She spoke quietly, a slow whisper, though the happiness was plain in her voice, as plain as the longing that engulfed her eyes as she thought of it. But her eyes hardened when she came back, realizing that she wasn't home any longer. She sighed, laying her head back down on her paws.

Miguel smiled as he listened to Kariah tell about the loner lands. He didn't much care that he'd have to fend for himself, for he felt that here, already. Though his mother provided him his meals, he had no one to talk to, thus, no friends, or anything a nal should have. And by no means was he free, like Kariah had been. When Kariah lay her head down, Miguel also did. He didn't speak for at least a whole minute, but when he did, his voice was quivery, as if he had been crying. "It sounds cool," he whispered softly. He had talked so low that he wondered if Kariah had heard him. "Well, again, I'm really sorry. You'll just have to go along with me for a while, okay? Don't take anything bad I say about you serious, please? I don't really mean it. I have to, though, you know?" Miguel was referring to his parents. Though it ached his soul to degrade Kariah, it was the only thing keeping him alive right now.

Kariah chuckled when he commented about life as a loner. He didn't understand, and he never would, if she didn't get him out of here. And he wouldn't completely understand, because he wasn't female. Her mother was proof that it was difficult for lone felmes. There were so many situations that you didn't have in packs. But she didn't tell him this. She hadn't understood until only recently.
"It's fine, Miguel. I don't mind." She gave a final wag of her tail, and then closed her eyes before Scarlet woke up. She wasn't going to be caught like this, not now. She willed herself to sleep, her ears pinned back as they had been since she'd gotten here.
